Uniformitarianism

James Hutton is credited with the principle of uniformitarianism, the idea that the geologic processes of the Earth occur and will continue to occur at the same frequencies and magnitude thoughout time.

Answer the following questions:
1. How does this principle hold true throughout the history of the planet. Give some specific examples.
2. What does this imply about the future of the planet? Elaborate on your answer.

  2. 1. The water cycle is an example of uniformitarianism because it is a never ending process. Plate techtonics are also an example because they have moved in the past and they continue to move nowadays.
    2. This implies that history repeats itself a lot of the time and that things will never stop happening. It also says that things like my examples will always happen.

  3. the way the statement holds true to its idea is 1 plate tectonics 2 how the earth it self moves(mountains rise, ocean sink, and cities destroyed).
the plates of the earth will continue to move and change as long as the laws of physics or the principle or erosion.

  4. James Hutton's theory holds true throughout history because the events in history is always happening such as the plates moving across the globe. An example of an event is the vocanic islands that rise though the oceans constantly happens. Another reason is the way the volcanos erupt the same way everytime. This implies that in the future a catastrophic event will end the cenozoic era. The cenozoic era could end in a way that the other eras ended in catastophies or possibly a mass extinction of humans and animals.

  5. 1. You can see that the plates keep moving over time. The Earth clearly looked different 200 million years ago.
2.In the future, the Earth will definetly look different from how it looks now.

  6. In the past there have been earthquakes and things of that nature because of the movment of the tectonic plates and in the future the plates will continue to shift, thus moving our continents as they have in the past. For example scientists hypothesize that over time, because of shifting plates, hawaii may gradually move closer to china.

  7. This theroy will hold up becuase records show that the plates move the same way they have before. Maybe not in the same rate but most likely. With this being said we will know that our eatrh's plates will conutine you to move. If this didn't happen thing would be different

  8. well i think that the geologic time scale will keep on adding ages, and i think that each era will bring something new to our earth. i think that what happen in the past will happen in the future. That each era will have a catastrophic time

  9. I understand what James Hutton is saying the world will always change and there will be volcanic activity and the plates will move more and more over time. The future of the planet some say history repeats itself and that may happen in the future. The the contenits might move together to form pangea again the earth might have another ice age or the tempature might increase and make the world heat up we dont know but we'll see

  10. 1.At the end of the Paleozoic era there was a mass extinction and at the end of the mesozoic there was also a mass extinction, this is uniformitaianism because this principle is suggesting that what happen in the past will happen in the future.
2.That in the future there is gonna be another mass extinction.

  11. 1. The events that happened in the past will possibly happen in the future. They say that the world ended a long time ago and will possibly end again.
    2. The future of the planets will include events from the past like plate movement and how we could possibly go into pangea again. It means that the world will repeat it self not 100% of the time but there is a possibility it could happen again.

    ReplyDelete
  12. (1)This holds true by saying that events that happened in the past have or will happen recently. Plate movement for example, they have moved in the past and are still moving now -most likely into places into or near where they were during Pangaea.
(2)This implies that the future of the planet will include events from the past -events like plate movement, forming volcanic islands, etc. It implies that if it has happened in the past that it will most likely happen again in a similar way but not necessarily in the same place as before.

  13. Uniformitarianism states that the Earth will change at the same rate in time and with the same force as it did in the past, which can proven in some cases. Erosion, for example, will always occur bacuase the wind, rain, sun, etc will not stop weathering the planet. The plates also will continue moving and changing, such as with volcanoes and mountains forming. It implies that the planet will always change. As the planet changes, so will everything on the surface of it, such as the mountains and other landforms, and the creatures and technology.

    ReplyDelete
  14. 1. The earth will not stop changing because of natural desasters, volcanoes, and plat tectonices moving because of this the earth will always be changing just like it was in the past.
    2. This implys that over time are earth will not stop having natural desasters and plate tectonics moving. This causes the earth to go through many changes and evolving. We can tell this because there is remains in the past of this.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1) The water cycle and the plate tectonic movement is an example of uniformitarianism. All of these have happened in the past and will most likely happen in the future. As long as there is water, the water cycle will continue, and as long as the Earth doesn't cool down, the plate tectonics will continue moving and colliding.
    2) In the future, erosion will probably continue and so will the eruption of the volcanoes.these are things that we can't really control. Things like this have happened in the past and will continue in the future.

    ReplyDelete
  16. 1. states that the processes of the geologic of the earth will repeat over time through the sane rate and time.

    2. using the uniformitrianism will help figure out future process of the earth

    ReplyDelete
  17. The principle of Uniforitarinism is being held true, today because, the plates are still moving. The earth is still changing and will still change in the future. Volcanoes and earthquakes still happen the same way they did millions of years ago. We can probably guess, that the land will be changed around, and probably look something like Pangea again eventually.

    ReplyDelete
  18. 1: It's true, in that things like erosion and plate tectonics keep happening. It doesn't just stop, it continues on and on. If erosion stopped in the past, mountains today would be larger. If the Earth's plates stopped moving we could still be living on one continent.

    2. In the future things will still keep happening. Plate tectonics won't stop, and erosion will keep wearing down rocks. This most likely means that the world won't change suddenly, unless there is a catastophe.

  20. 1. Based on what james hutton is saying is that the earth will continue changing and thats true the earth has defintly evolved over the millions of years with volcanic activity plates moving ect.
    2. The future as well will change as well mabey there will be another ice age of pangea will come again the earth is constantly changing....

    ReplyDelete
  21. It holds true throughout history because we have had ice ages that repeat themselves, global heat waves (global warming), and we have disasters that are in the same place.
These things keep happening over time so, they aren't just going to stop all the sudden and never happen again. They will happen and how much they will happen and how bad they are will depend on the future of the planet.

    ReplyDelete
  22. 1.James Hutton is correct and i say this because pangea and other fetures to the earth are cahnging at a rate in time and at a certian way.
EX: platechtonics they move a certian distance and continue to move at that distance every time they move for a certian amount of time.

    2. in the future we may or may not have another pangea occure. byy the way scientest are analyzing things it seems as if the plates are always moving maybe not in big moves but they are moving.

    ReplyDelete
  23. 1. I think its true because erosion and volcanic eruptions keep happening and they have been for a while and they still will be for a long time. If volcanic eruptions stopped we wouldn't have Hawaii.

    2. I think that in the future some kind of massive extinction will happen and a new era or period will begin just like in the past.

    ReplyDelete
  24. History holds true throughout the planet because of all the changes that have happen and will continue to happen like the pangea, earthquakes, erosion, volcanoes, landslides, and hurricanes.
this implies that everything that has happened to the planet so far will continue to happen it will continue to cause problems. but yet it is still a fact of uniformitarianism, because basically the changes are just processes.

    ReplyDelete
  25. 1) Uniformitarianism is the idea that history reapeats itself. This holds holds true in many cases. For example, the water cycle is a never-ending cycle beginning with evaporation and ending in persperation in the form of rain, sleet, or snow. it will happen this way everytime with out differentiation. Another example is plate tectonics. The plates move across the Earth's mantle as heat is released. This process will continue until the Earth has completely cooled off.
    2) What this shows about the future is that processes that occur today will no doubt occur for many years to come. As a result this era will undoubtedly end and another one will follow it. It may end in another mass extinction or in some form of a global catastrophy. Either way, every species has it's time on the Earth and every species time will come to an end at some point whether it is tomorrow of millions of years ahead we will never know for sure.

    ReplyDelete
  26. 1.It holds true because because we have had hurricanes that have happened again and we have also had ice ages.

2.This tells that the future of the planet is going to have the same things happen then the Earth will keep starting over. Unless there is something that happens that destroys the Earth.

    ReplyDelete
  27. (1). Uniformitarianism is a gradually slow process that keeps on occuring at a very slow pace. Some examples are the plate tectonics. We may not feel it, but it is moving very slowly and is changing the earth.
(2). If this process keeps on going, then the earth in a few decades would slightly change. But, later on it could change magificantly.

    ReplyDelete
  28. For one the water cycle is continous, and no matter how destructive plate tectonics is it won't stop them from moving. The planet's cycles are exactly that ,cycles. That means that they will keep repeating them selves.Global warming is nonexistent. the earth just keeps going through heating phases. that is my post and I'm sticking to it!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. 1. This is true because processes like erosion, the water cycle, and plate tectonics have been happening since the very beginning. Some examples would be eroded fossils or old volcanoes.

2.This implies that these processes will continue to happen because they have always occured at the same frequency throughout time.

    ReplyDelete
  30. The principal of uniformitarianism holds true throughout history because plate techtonics for example have never ceased to move. That means that earthquakes will always occur so that the Earth can keep cool. Also, the water cyle will always occur because we will never stop it. This implies that the planet will always have its geologic processes.

    ReplyDelete
  31. 1. I think that the water cycle is an example of uniformitarism, because just like uniformtarism it never ends. Another example would be plate tectonics because in the past they were movng, and in the near future they will still be moving.
    2. This implies about the future of the planet that in the near future that the plate tectonics will keep moving, and the world will keep changing no matter what.

    ReplyDelete
  32. 1.Rock layers are an example of uniformitarianiam because they change throughout time. Also the water cycle is another example because it is a never ending process.
2.Well in the future it means that things will never stop happening and the Earth's history will keep repeating its self.

    ReplyDelete
  33. 1)I think his principle is true, because looking back through history the earth hasn't just had one climate change of one earth quake. It is constantly changing because it is still evolving. Just like how the core of the earth is still extermely hot but it's costanly trying to cool.

2)I think the furure of our plant might lead to another great extinction or huge global change because of what has happened in the past. My guess is that man kind will eventually die out and something else will dominate the earth after us.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Uniformitarianism is still holding true becuase the earths plates arer still moving and they always will unless somthing catastophic happens.

    ReplyDelete
  35. 1)The principle is true. Because pangea, the water cycle, plate tectonics and erosion are examples of the principle.

2)I think it will imply in the future because history could repeat itself and it might not but regardless the water cycle, erosion and e.t.c will continue because the earth goes through one big cycle of change.

    ReplyDelete
  36. 1.) The priciple does holds true throught out history. An example would be water cycle because the water cyle is never stopping it just continues to make more rain then evaporates the rain then makes more rain. Another example is tectonic plates moving because every second it is moving but we can't feel it.
2.) It implys that if everything is consistent that nothing will really change. Like tectonic plate, they will never stop moving.

    ReplyDelete
  37. 1. This principle is held true throughout time by processes such as the water cycle and plate tectonics.
    2. This implies that there will most likely be more fluctuations in climate so animals will have to evolve more to adapt, and that the earth's crust will continue to move thus pangea/another super continent may form again. There also may be another mass extinction.

1.The tectonic plates are type of uniformitsarianism because they are continuing to move now every day. Another type is the water cycle because it is a endless process.
2.The first answer implies to the future because if the tectonic plates continue to move it could cause the continents to collide and cause another super continent. the water cycle implies because it is endless and it will keep continuing to do the same process.

    ReplyDelete
  39. 1. Things have been changing since pretty much the beginning. The earth started out as Pangea, but the plates slowly have been shifting ever since. The climate has changed, too. There have been several ice ages, and there probably will be more in the future. Global warming might actually just be part of the natural process of climate change.

    2. Things will probably keep happening like they did in the past. It's not going to be exactly the same, I don't think everyone will be wiped out from a meteor anytime soon, but the continents will eventually be completely different, and there might be another ice age in a million years or so.

    ReplyDelete
  40. 1. The Earth has gone through many eras each separated by a specific event such as the breakup of Pangea. The Earth has always been changing and it will continue to do so.
2.This means that even after we're gone the planet will still keep changing.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Tectonic plates are going to move in the same way and soon end up exactly how it started out as pangea. This similar thing goes for the heating of the ozone and global warming it will continue to have a pattern of heating up then cooing down. This tells us that in the future these things will continue to happen. We will end up in the same place we started with pangea being together and the earth cooling down.

  42. Uniformitarianism

    ReplyDelete
  43. Uniformitarianism is when mountains form over time by earthquakes and plates moving and volcanoes and stuff like that.

    ReplyDelete
  44. uniformitarianism can be many things such as volcanic eruptions or tidal waves. That occure with over and over again such as climate does or the tide. this means what happend in the past such as climate changes is still happening

    ReplyDelete
  45. 1. For example the water cycle is a good example of uniformitarianism because it is a never ending cycle. Also reproduction is a good example of uniformitarianism because mamals and insects are always reproducing.
    2. This implys that our plant will always have a constant flow of something no matter what it is something will always be going on.

    ReplyDelete
  46. 1.Plate tectonics is one because it has happened throughout history and is happening now and will keep happening for as long as the Earth is here. its a never ending proccess.

    ReplyDelete
  47. 1. One example is tectonic plates, they shifted back then and they are nowadays and they will in the future. That's one reason why the earthquakes have occured all over the country this year. Another example it the volcanic eruptions, there were eruptions back then and there are some now.
    2. This lets us know that everything is constant and the plates will always move. Nothing is going to change.

    ReplyDelete
  48. 1. The principle of Uniformitarianism is true throughout history because every year or so there is one or two hurricanes around the world, and they will continue to happen as the years go by.
2.It might imply that the same things will happen to the Earth as they once did years ago. For example there might be another ice age in our future, or the continents might become one again.

    ReplyDelete
  49. This principle holds true with maney things. Such as Volcanoes and Tectonic plates. For example Tectonic plates have been moving since the beginning of time and always will. Volcanoes have been exploding for billions of years and will most likely keep on exploding till the end of time. This tells us that everything that has happened in the past will most likely continue in the future. For example, what might happen if the tectonic plates keep on moving we might have pangea form again, where all the continent comes together.

    ReplyDelete
  50. I think that the earth will keep having new life forms and definatly have more era's.This imply that the earth is not going to end soon and that there are going to be alot more changes.More plants diffrent animals and alot of more new bacteria's and also more climate changes.Somehow the earth changes each and everyday.

    ReplyDelete
  51. I think that this principle is true because geologic processes have continued on since they have first started, and they will still evovolve in the future. Like when pangea happened in the Cenezoic Era and lasted until the Mezosoic Era. When Pangea does happen again it will most likely continue at the same frequence as it did when the plates sepeated. I think that it will happen again because plate techtonics are still mooving and will eventually connect again. This principle implies that the earth will go through a lot of future changes but will still go through some of the same processes. But over time some of the processes may change in some way.

    ReplyDelete
  52. The tectonic plates are a sigh of Uniformatarianism, beacause the tectonic plates are costantly moving and there were moving when Pangea was torn apart. Also Pangea could come back together, but in a different way, as Pangea. Unforminatarianism implys to the future that the Earht is always and forever will change and have geologiv processes.

    ReplyDelete
  53. This particular priciple holds true throughout the history of a planet because uniformitarism h occurs over and over again for ex. plate tectonics, earthquackes , erosion , and the water cycle.

The planets future will have uniformitarianism because those sorts of things will always occur.

    ReplyDelete
  54. things are going to happen geolically no matter what.so natural disasters such as erosion volcanoes and other things are going to happen.i think the future is going to do the same thing to earth that already happen like pangea for example. i think that earth has a cycle and throughout all these years the cycle repeats

    ReplyDelete
  55. I think that his theory is right because of how the repeation of erosion, the movement of the tectonic plates, and other geological processes that shaped earth are still going on today, over and over again. But if it wasn't true then how come the same things that happened over 540 mya are happening now?

I think that this will have an effect on Earth in the future and that Pangea will form once again, because of it.

    ReplyDelete
  56. No because, we as humans havent been living on the earth that long to make an impact. so the rates cant change if we havent effected the earth in any way at all. I think that there is just a cycle that hasnt been recorded every billion years. I think the future of our planet could go up in ice or fire.

    ReplyDelete
  57. 1. I think that this principle is true because we got things on our Earth that is never going to stop and will continue. An example is plate tectonics, the plates move all the time whether its big moves or small move. We have Earthquakes that move our planet everytime that an Earthquake happens.

    2. I think that this can effect our future very big because it can change change the shpe of the Earth and also cause the continents to maybe move again.

    ReplyDelete
  58. This ppricible holds true through out the histrory of the world by what the Earth's processes had a effect on the world. The water cycle for example, the precipitation causes erosions on rocks, the volcanic eruptions that created mountains of today, and the earthquakes that sseparated the continents and also caused faults. If the sciences' theories are right about the rates of the earthquakes, volcanoes, and the watercycle, then the future of the Earth really is going to change the Earht signifigantly in a big event that might happen.
